After the death of Sati — his first wife and the daughter of Daksha — Lord Shiva withdrew from the world in endless grief. He retreated to the icy peaks of Mount Kailash, absorbed in deep meditation, his heart closed to the universe he had once loved.
The world suffered without Shiva's divine energy. The gods grew weak, and a terrifying demon named Tarakasura rose to power, knowing that only a son born of Shiva could defeat him. But Shiva, lost in his sorrow, had no desire to love again.
Sati was reborn as Parvati — the daughter of Himavan, king of the mountains. From childhood, Parvati's heart was set on Shiva. She served him with flowers, swept the paths he walked, and prayed for his love. But Shiva, deep in samadhi, remained unmoved.
Parvati decided that if devotion in softness would not reach him, then she would match his austerity. She discarded her ornaments, wore bark clothing, and performed tapas so intense that flames arose from her body, shaking the three worlds. She stood on one foot, fasted for months, endured storms and heat — all to prove her love.
Shiva, moved by her unbreakable resolve, finally opened his eyes. He tested her by appearing as a Brahmin and speaking ill of himself — to see if she truly loved him or merely his power. Parvati's unwavering defence of Shiva moved him to tears. He revealed his true form, and in that sacred moment, love conquered even the lord of destruction.
Their celestial wedding on Kailash was attended by all the gods, sages, and celestial beings. Their union was not merely of two souls — it was the union of Consciousness and Energy, Shiva and Shakti, the two forces that together sustain all of creation.
सती के देहत्याग के बाद — जो भगवान शिव की प्रथम पत्नी और प्रजापति दक्ष की पुत्री थीं — शिव ने असीम विरह में संसार से मुँह मोड़ लिया। वे हिमालय की हिमाच्छादित चोटियों पर गहरी समाधि में लीन हो गए, उनका हृदय उस संसार के लिए बंद हो गया जिसे वे कभी इतना प्रेम करते थे।
शिव की दिव्य ऊर्जा के बिना सारी सृष्टि कष्ट में डूब गई। देवगण दुर्बल पड़ने लगे और तारकासुर नामक एक भयंकर दैत्य शक्तिशाली हो गया — वह जानता था कि केवल शिव का पुत्र ही उसे परास्त कर सकता है। किंतु शोक में डूबे शिव को पुनः प्रेम-बंधन में बँधने की कोई इच्छा न रही।
सती ने पुनर्जन्म लिया — पर्वतराज हिमवान की कन्या पार्वती के रूप में। बचपन से ही पार्वती का हृदय शिव को समर्पित था। वे उनके लिए पुष्प चढ़ातीं, उनके मार्ग को स्वच्छ करतीं और निरंतर प्रार्थना करती रहतीं। पर गहरी समाधि में लीन शिव अविचल बने रहे।
पार्वती ने निश्चय किया — यदि कोमलता की भक्ति उन तक नहीं पहुँच सकती, तो वे स्वयं शिव की तपस्या का मार्ग अपनाएँगी। उन्होंने सभी आभूषण त्यागे, वल्कल वस्त्र धारण किए और इतनी प्रचंड तपस्या की कि उनके शरीर से ज्वालाएँ उठने लगीं जिनसे तीनों लोक काँप उठे। एक पैर पर खड़ी रहीं, महीनों निर्जल उपवास किया, तूफान और तपन सहते हुए अपने प्रेम को सिद्ध किया।
पार्वती की इस अटूट दृढ़ता से शिव का हृदय द्रवित हो उठा — उन्होंने नेत्र खोले। उन्होंने एक ब्राह्मण का वेश धारण कर परीक्षा ली और स्वयं की निंदा की — यह देखने के लिए कि क्या पार्वती सच में उनसे प्रेम करती हैं या केवल उनकी शक्ति से। पार्वती की अटल निष्ठा ने शिव को अश्रुपूरित कर दिया। शिव ने अपना वास्तविक रूप प्रकट किया, और उस पवित्र क्षण में प्रेम ने विनाश के अधिपति को भी जीत लिया।
कैलाश पर हुए उस दिव्य विवाह में सभी देवता, ऋषि-मुनि और खगोलीय प्राणी उपस्थित थे। यह मिलन केवल दो प्राणियों का मिलन नहीं था — यह चेतना और ऊर्जा का, शिव और शक्ति का मिलन था, वे दो अनादि शक्तियाँ जो मिलकर समस्त सृष्टि को धारण करती हैं।
