Navratri ("nine nights") is one of the most widely celebrated Hindu festivals, dedicated to the worship of the nine forms of Goddess Durga — the Navdurga. Devotees observe fasts, perform Kalash Sthapana, and recite the Durga Chalisa to invoke Shakti, courage and protection from Maa Durga.
Each of the nine days of Navratri is dedicated to one form of Goddess Durga, each representing a distinct aspect of divine feminine power:
- Clean the puja area and place a layer of soil with barley (jau) seeds in a wide vessel — these sprout over the nine days (Jwara/Khetri).
- Install the Kalash (holy pot) filled with water, mango leaves and a coconut on top, during an auspicious Ghatasthapana muhurat on the first day.
- Install an image/idol of Maa Durga beside the Kalash and light an Akhand Jyoti (unbroken lamp) if observing the full nine-day vow.
- Offer flowers, sindoor, fruits and recite the Durga Chalisa or Durga Saptashati each day.
- On Ashtami/Navami, perform Kanya Pujan — worshipping young girls as forms of the goddess — before breaking the fast.
Navratri celebrates the victory of good over evil — Goddess Durga's battle with the demon Mahishasura, culminating in his defeat on Vijayadashami. It is a festival of Shakti (divine feminine power), inner discipline through fasting, and gratitude for the harvest.
